Leopard coming soon!
The long awaited new MacOSX release (10.5) will be released tomorrow.
My box with "Leopard Family Pack" should be arriving today. I don't know when I'll have time to upgrade my Macs because I'm depending on available, stable systems (my laptop will probably the first - I use it the least).
Some of the improvements I'll care/note care about:
- Spaces, a feature I'm really looking forward to as I've been using virtual desktops for years on Linux
- Mail.app improvements, especially. the option to store notes
- Time Machine. May come in handy though it's a bit too hyped. It simply incrementally backups changes and has a way too fancy UI on top of it
- Don't care about iChat improvements, I don't use it because it lacks mainstream protocols such as MSN. I'd wish I had the choice not to use MSN, but unfortunately, the rest of the world uses it.
- Finder.. people have been complaining it sucks for years, but I'm a command-line guy anyway - I do most of my filemanagement in Terminal.app. But perhaps this'll change with the new Finder, who knows.
- ZFS, too bad it's not yet supported (what use is read-only support?). I had hoped that with all the Leopard delays, it would be available in a stable, read/write version. Now I will have to reinstall again once the support becomes available.
Some early observations:
macrumours has an overview
the lame leopard real life issues from an experienced OSX user/developer
osxfactor minor shortcomings imho.
No wireless Time Machine backups in Leopard - and it sounded like a really cool feature. Lots of people are frustrated about this last minute decision
An overview of less-hyped new features
I think upgrading any of my systems is too risky right now, mostly because I'm not sure if MacPorts will still work. I just purchased a 160GB Lacie usb disk (2.5") so I'll try an install on that disk first.
