Google wave - awesome
The future of email? I wonder how spammers will exploit this.
I just finished watching the Google Wave Preview video, which is the Wave presentation at Google IO. Google sees it the way e-mail would be if it was invented today (instead of 40 years ago). Quite a claim, but it definately has a future.
In a nutshell, a Wave is a collaborative, interactive form of communication between multiple people. Somewhat like a Wiki on steroids. But the best thing is that it's completely open! This means:
You will be able to run your own wave servers (like you run your own smtp server)
- Waveservers from different companies will be able to communicatie directly (like email). No islands of information/users!
- The protocol is open
- The Wave server/application will be opensource. So you will be able to run what you see in the demo yourself.
- It's extendible through "extension"/robots. Sample applications provide a very impressive spellcorrection and translation robot ("rosy"), issue tracker integration, and more.
- Google Maps like integration into existing pages. I.e. you can replace those old commentsystems by Waves.
I've taken a very quick look at the protocol. It appears to be built on top of XMPP (rfc3920)
All in all I'm pleasantly surprised and I definately hope to be able to play with this myself real soon.
