Belated Linkinus review

Better late than never, but at least I had plenty of time to test.

About a year ago I ran into Linkinus, an IRC client for OSX. I had been using clients like XChat-aqua and Colloquy for a while but I wasn't too satisfied with them. Linkinus looked like a good client and like most usefull software on OSX, it was commercial.

After playing with it for a while I was satisfied enogugh with it and bought a license for $25. But now, a year later (and 8 months without a release/update), I'm getting more and more annoyyed by little frustrations such as:

  • The simplified dark theme often jumps to new output when scrolling
  • Dragging a url from linkinus to a browser won't work if you drag over the channel/server box
  • control-U (or most control-combinations) send the line in stead of killing it. Quite a diiference and possibly embarassing if you want to cancel something.
  • Context menu not always working
  • Illogical, un-mac-like user interface design. Split screens, complex menu's (even + and - are menu's!). Perhaps it's trying to compete with clients like IRSSI or bitchx but I prefer a clean, simple, userfriendly interface in stead.
  • Sometimes it handles too much info, it doesn't putput everything to the console (when I think it should), like names or mode directly on a channel

I'm re-considering xchat-aqua and Colloquy again and see if they've improved last year. Linkinus hasn't, unfortunately.
