Asus Eee PC really coming now!
Asus' new ultraportable laptop
I'm always fighting with laptop sizes. They're usually too small for "serious" development work, i.e. onsite development at a customer (where I like a decent keyboard and large screen) and too large for just carrying around (i.e. for simple browsing, email, note taking but no development).
It's the same with my 13" Macbook - somewhat small for serious, longterm development, too large/heavy for taking to conferences and trips.
Furthermore, I don't like Windows (XP, Vista) on my laptop - it has to be either MacOSX (but that means a really limited selection of laptops) or Linux (preferably Ubuntu). But the OS has to be supported because properly configuring powersaving, suspending, etc on Linux can be a real pain (or simply impossible)
So what I need is an ultraportable laptop that runs Linux natively (it's still totally unclear if Apple will release something ultraportable anytime soon), preferably not too expensive (so you actually dare to take it with you on trips) and that has a decent keyboard and screen.
And the Asus Eee PC fits the bill perfectly:
- 7" screen
- wifi, usb, reasonable powerconsumption
- weighs less than 1kg
- runs Linux out of the box (though not ubuntu, but Debian based Xandros)
- cheap, though European prices are not available yet
According to this article, the Eee PC has started shipping in Taiwan and is expected in the US on November 1st.
